Jazzkaar Festival 2019

Telliskivi Loomelinnak, Telliskivi 60a, Tallinn, Estonia

19 - 28 Apr 2019

Jazzkaar is the star event of Estonian jazz, bringing here the world’s best performers. The name of the festival recalls Estonian folk party jaskar, but on the other hand, it reminds us also of variety of colors in jazz music – like in the rainbow; which all can be put under umbrella of jazz. Jazzkaar is the arc uniting musicians, audience, different periods and styles of jazz.

PILETILOOS! Ameerika legendaarse kitarristi John Scofieldi särav ja mõtestatud mäng on juba aastakümneid inspireerinud maailma jazzmuusikuid ja tema hoog ei näita raugemise märke. Scofield annab aastas üle kahesaja kontserdi, muusik on salvestanud 78 albumit, neist 30 oma nime all. Teistest jazzkitarristidest eristab teda külluslik stiilipalett, mida kannavad tugevad funky, soul’i, bluusi, etno, post-bopi ja roki mõjud. Kolme Grammy auhinnaga pärjatud kitarrist esines 2004. aastal Jazzkaarel oma kvartetiga ja 2015. aastal duos Jon Clearyga. Parimad tulevad tagasi.

Let's meet: Experimental Jazz Day: MARIA FAUST-TIM DAHL-WEASEL WALTER (Estonia-USA) Saxophonist and composer Maria Faust is best known for her unique sound and from her large groups including Maria Faust Sacrum Facere, Machina, Maria Faust Jazz Catastrophe, and In the Beginning (with Kira Skov). Her musical language crisscrosses over different styles, influenced by Estonian folk music and modern classical music, while at the same time presenting a romantic wave of modern experimental jazz music. Weasel Walter is a Brooklyn-based composer and multi-instrumentalist who is perhaps best known as a founder of The Flying Luttenbachers. Over the years, the band included noted Chicago musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Jeb Bishop, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Dylan Posa, and Michael Colligan, while creating a body of music drawing equally from no-wave, death-metal, free-jazz, punk, and modern classical music. Weasel Walter is a current member of Cellular Chaos, Lydia Lunch´s Retrovirus, and has played with musicians such as Peter Evans, Nate Wooley, Evan Parker, and John Edwards, to name just a few. Tim Dahl is an electric and double bass player, vocalist, keyboardist, and composer who has lived in New York City since 1998. He is best known as the bass player and co-composer of the noise-rock band Child Abuse, and in Lydia Lunch´s Retrovirus. She grew up in Ethiopia, Vietnam and Sweden. Since 2011 she lives in Oslo, Norway. One of her deepest interests as a singer is to explore the “instrumental” possibilities of the voice.
